Questions for your doctor about laparoscopic hysterectomy

Based on your condition, there are questions you might want to ask your doctor or surgeon.  The following questions are designed to help you find out more information about your particular condition and the kinds of treatment that may be right for you.  The more informed you are, the more comfortable you’ll be with the decision you, your family, and your doctor make together.

The idea of a hysterectomy can be overwhelming.  So it’s important that your doctor help you understand the reasons why you may need to have your uterus removed.  Ask for some time to speak with him or her in the office, away from the examining room, when you can be fully dressed and comfortable.  It’s a good idea to bring your questions in writing and take notes.  You may even want to bring along a friend or family member.

  1. Are there any other procedures or treatments I can try first, before a hysterectomy?  Why or why not?
  2. What type of hysterectomy do you recommend for me?
  3. Do you perform minimally invasive hysterectomies?  (If a minimally invasive hysterectomy is not recommended, ask why.)
  4. Will my ovaries or any reproductive organs other than my uterus be removed during my hysterectomy?
  5. Am I a candidate to preserve my cervix with a Laparoscopic Supracervical Hysterectomy (LSH)?
  6. I have heard that LSH may preserve sexual function and pelvic floor support.  Is this true?
  7. How long of a hospital stay and recovery time can I expect with a minimally invasive hysterectomy?
  8. How many procedures have you performed in the last 12 months of this type?
  9. How much scarring will there be?
  10. What is the complication rate associated with this type of hysterectomy?
  11. When will I be able to leave the hospital?
  12. When can I resume my normal activities, including work, exercise, sexual activity and recreation?
  13. Will I continue to need annual pap smear tests?
  14. May I talk to one of your patients who had the same type of hysterectomy you are recommending for me?
  15. If you cannot perform my hysterectomy through a minimally invasive way, can you refer me to a doctor specializing in laparoscopic hysterectomy?
